Alternatives to Photobucket

Post by Valka D'Ur » Tue Jan 02, 2018 11:23 am

I have a paid Photobucket account that expires sometime this year (not sure what's going to happen come June 1 - if they would keep their word about allowing me to renew at my former rate until December). They had tried to make me pay two yearly fees for the same year (the second at a higher rate), and after I wrote back and accused them of unethical business practices and violating their own terms of service/use by forcing people to view pornographic images as part of their "see what images are available on this website" promotion while people are trying to log in, they backed down and gave me a reprieve. It also helped that I've been a paid member there for many years, so I also threw customer loyalty at them and asked them why they were treating a loyal customer this way.

This isn't going to last, though. That site has become sleazy and unreliable, I refuse to pay the same amount per month that I would normally pay for an entire year, and I need an alternative that's affordable, provides for private albums, and allows third-party hosting. I've been going through my albums there and deleting everything I no longer want or need, and will migrate the rest of it to a new site.

Imgur is out. They made it very clear that they won't allow third-party hosting.

I used to have an active Fotki account, and will check that out.

Any other suggestions would be welcome. I need to be able to host smileys, backgrounds, banners, avatars, icons, and lots more for the various forums where I'm an admin and because I'd like to get back into entering the avatar contests at TrekBBS (haven't been due to my unwillingness to upload anything new to my Photobucket account).

The thing you need to understand about image hosting sites is that in the long run, none of them are reliable. And I do have a large amount of experience with them. I upload pics knowing that they will only be available for an indeterminate time. But I don't pay for anything.

I paid for a couple of reasons: First, I couldn't risk any bandwidth issues, which happened fairly frequently with free accounts (from what I noticed with some images on the Doctor Who forum I run). All the non-default images there (with the exception of the banner) are hosted on my Photobucket account. Having "you have exceeded your monthly bandwidth" images plastered all over the forum was simply not an option I was willing to risk.

Secondly, I hate ads. There are a couple of sites I'm willing to pay $$ for, to avoid them. TrekBBS resorted to dirty pool to force people to either view the ads or induce people to take out premium memberships. I pay since there are other perks of that kind of membership, and I never have issues with the ads seen by the non-premium members (some ads apparently cause a great deal of trouble for people).

Have you ever looked at Imageshack? https://imageshack.com/ Back when they were a free service, they were the best around. Stopped using them when they stopped being free. But they have been around like 15 years, which is an eternity online.

http://www.imagevenue.com/hostflash.php has been around almost as long, and has been mostly reliable.

not as reliable, but free.

www.upix.me (Handles files up to 6mb in size)

https://someimage.com/ (Maximum 15 MB filesize)

http://sharenxs.com (unlimited file size)

www.supload.com (unlimited file size - maximum image dimensions are 1600x3200)

www.radikal.cc (Handles files up to 10Mb in size)

www.imagebam.com (Handles files up to 10Mb in size)

http://imgbox.com (Handles files up to 10mb in size)

http://www.turboimagehost.com/

Imgur works great, on the sites that they do not block. But they tend to block places with a lot of traffic. I use them when I post a pic here or on CFC, because that's stable enough. I don't use them some other places, because I can't.

I think from your description Imageshack might be the best choice that I know about.

I will check those out, thank you! :)

I have an Imageshack account, and their customer service is crap. I was trying to get my stuff off there and onto Photobucket the year before this garbage happened with Photobucket.

Imgur isn't a problem for pictures posted in actual posts. But they have flatly said they won't allow the kind of hosting I need - banners, backgrounds, icons, etc. to do CSS editing so the forums I run can have custom-made skins (I guess they call them "themes" nowadays).

I don't mind paying a reasonable amount if it means no ads and no worries about bandwidth. Photobucket worked fine until a couple of years ago when things started glitching, and then whoever owns it now decided to get greedy. They're advertising crap now that has nothing at all to do with photos - not even stuff like mugs, mousepads, prints, etc.

Is Amazon S3 an option for you? I've heard it runs rather cheap, and I think they have a free trial if you want to try it out first.

I've never heard of that. Where do I find it?

It's a web server service. You'd need to get it set up by a professional.

https://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing/

Your costs go up the more bandwidth/requests you use. It can be very cost effective for small sites that won't see much traffic, but your costs might inflate a little too much for one's comfort if you get a lot of thru-traffic.

There's a calculator but it's mostly useless for a layperson: http://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html
